So what did everyone think? What were the highlights?

While not necessarily the highlight, here is a nice song by The Eliminators. Much more to follow.

Woops, didn't see this new thread. I posted my comments on the show at the original thread:

I also saw The Sand Devils who gave a very strong performance.

Outerwave has added new material and are even better since I last saw them, if that's possible.

Dave Wronski was awesome as usual. The hip-hop crowd filtering in was wide eyed. I think they learned old school is not Run DMC.

The Eliminators covering the great Shadows song,
"Theme for Young Lovers"

And here is the Link Wray tune "Steel Trap" featuring some great sax work by Bill Swanson.

Tim, that's actually "Theme for Young Lovers", not "Peace Pipe".

Hey Tim -- quick correction: the first song in the video is "Mr. Rebel" not "Movin'"

What's the 'etymology' of the -O-Rama 'suffix'? My mind is blanking and I feel like I should know the answer.

I had a very good time at the gig, a lot of killer stuff, as mentioned above Eddie withe the Eliminators and Dave with Outer Wave were excellent. Outer Wave indeed added more material and are awsome...
Thanks for the compliments everyone, it was a good gig for us (The Sand Devils) too, I was concerned with the setup and tear down time, but it all turned out ok. We hadn't played out in a while and I was glad there was a good response.
Tim, thanks for the video, the song is called "Scrambled" (part of our S series Snake Eyes, Stacatto Lane, Southsider)

Great version!

I'm glad more bands are doing Shads material now. it is near & dear to my heart. (Cads, Shadicks)

Too bad there is no video of the Shadicks from 2 years ago at Dekes. (maybe there is and it's not as good as I would like to remember)

Chris Barfield really nails that stuff. Gastley Garret did a great job as well.

Jeff Utterback

HbKahuna,

Thanks for posting the videos! They are really great! Man I wish I could have been there.
Thanks Again

Cool! Rock I'm gonna have to agree with cigarette-lighter-guy (Dave Arnson?) on that one.

AN AWESOME BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE TO REMEMBER

I can say without a doubt Sat February 23rd, 2008 was one of THEE most awesome days of my life. As the day grew closer I was more and more excited about the prospects of what was about to happen. I never could’ve imagined that it would be quite so incredibly spectacular that I thought I was dreaming when I arrived on scene. Before I take you on this amazing journey of within my extended surf music family please allow me to give you some of the background that lead up to this event.

Little did I realize 4 years ago when my friend and former Secretary for HBISM Michelle Juhasz asked me if I wanted to join the Board of Directors to facilitate Surfin Sundays, where it would lead. Embarking on this new adventure I was quite nervous and not at all sure how I would accomplish such a horrendous task but I had been in this position before so I knew I‘d work my way through it. Former HBISM Chairman and booking agent Robert Frederickson was resigning leaving Surfin Sundays going nowhere and in dire need of someone holding it together. Apparently I was the first person that came to Michelle’s mind as the best person for the job. When I received her phone call I was so ready for a change in my life, having lost my only son Scotty the year before. After all this was a chance of a lifetime working with the sights, sounds and legends of the music I grew up with and so dearly loved. Michelle was certain of my success as their new booking agent cause not only am I friends with Dick Dale “King of the Surf Guitar” but I have a passion for surf music embedded in my blood. Accepting my newfound volunteer job I began to seek advice from Robert and Dick who so willingly offered whatever they could think of to help. One thing lead to another and I began to realize through taking care of my son Scotty and my relationship with Dick Dale I had inadvertently created a substantial base of talented musicians who would be honored to play for me.

I decided from the very beginning representing the surf culture as a whole I would work toward only having surf bands to represent HBISM in all their entertainment ventures. Turns out meeting so many people over the years through Dick and Scotty’s special relationship I too had developed a following. Unbeknownst to me I was earning the respect of these talented musicians as they watched me tirelessly tend to Scotty’s horrendous needs despite my own suffering with the effects of muscular dystrophy. One by one as word spread the new kid on the block tending to Surfin Sundays was Scotty’s mom, the guys couldn’t wait to help me in anyway they could. That first year I learned by trial and error and asking tons of questions, the second gaining more knowledge, the third learning patience but none-the-less successful overall. This year seems to be establishing itself as the need for flexibility but I know it too will be successful because of the caliber of bands in my entourage and their willingness to do so.

During Scotty’s tenure on this earth I had befriended Jeff “Big Tiki Dude” who was more than willing to help me in any way he could. As I soon discovered Jeff like me has a passion for surf music and wanted so much to expand and improve the Surfin Sundays program. Together being open, honest, completely on the same page yet at other times agreeing to disagree has opened up our eyes to a new dimension of possibilities. Jeff has been my advisor from time to time, introduced me to new groups and remained a faithful roadie doing whatever grunt work is necessary whether he’s feeling well enough or not.

One of my other faithful roadies known as “Baja Marty” was a special friend to my Scotty and an avid Dick Dale fan that we befriended at DD concerts over the years. Marty helps out as much as possible with a smile on his face spreading the love from his heart and soul for the surf music culture and it’s people. You will usually find Marty up close and personal when the band starts playing cause he doesn’t want to miss a single note.

My newest roadie is Tyler Kegler who we befriended through my best buddy Dick Dale as one of his roadies. Despite troubles of his own Tyler is always willing to help whenever and wherever possible and holds a special place in my heart. There are many people over the years that I can think of who have contributed vastly to my success but too numerous to mention in this story.

As for Outer Wave, Jerry Rogers, Allen Bridgewater, Jeff “Mac” Mac Donald & Tony Ruiz I owe meeting them to Jim & Sue Copeland, avid participants of Surfin Sundays. Jim told me one night at another surf music venue known as Suzy’s that I couldn’t live without Outer Wave. Jim pointed out Jerry Rogers in the crowd so I walked over to him and said, “I understand I can’t live without you” which of course got his undivided attention. Despite the fact the first paying gig I got for them was at a sun club they are and will always remain great friends of mine. Jerry had heard there was a small celebration at the Purple Orchid with Insect Surfers, Boardwalkers and Reventlos minus Lee Kix playing Jan 5th for my actual birthday. Jerry talked it over with Doug Forbes and decided I deserved a major tribute for all my work over the years in establishing a firm base for surf music and promoting it every chance I get. That being said Jerry set out to create the celebration of a lifetime and dedicate the whole day to me. Jerry claims it was easy but I know all the things that you can encounter when organizing this sort of event.

Entering this establishment upon arrival I couldn’t help but notice to what extent Jerry had gone in setting up this celebration. I was greeted by dozens of well-wishers and as my eyes got adjusted to the lower volume of light I began to take in the expanse of this great venue. What I saw was amazing, a good size stage in the middle of the venue with stairs on one side, a ramp on the other, sound equipment and professional lighting. The kind of venue I have been searching and longing for over the years. The restaurant itself was quite large, very clean with adequate personnel for the crowd and a very friendly atmosphere. The Gaslamp would certainly be a place I’d consider for future endeavors of this magnitude.

I was delighted to find out Allen Bridgewater had secured a Fender Stratocaster guitar for raffling off and giving the proceeds to HBISM. Not only did Allen secure this guitar and sell the tickets but he made sure the members of the bands signed it as well. At the end of the evening he handed me $700 from the raffle and during the event another gentleman handed me a $50 check to give to HBISM because he likes what I do for the museum. I had no idea any of this raffle idea was planned but Allen told me he did it because he’d do anything for me. Tony and Mac’s contribution of manual labor in helping set up each band and tending to their equipment didn’t go unnoticed by me either. JR’s wife Lenore graciously made sure I had what I needed and escorted me through the crowd to the restroom which was greatly appreciated. Lenore lit up the candles on my cake and Marilyn’s cake and served it to all the guests with a beautiful smile on her face. Marilyn Kirkpatrick I speak of is a friend of mine who had her real birthday during this celebration so I shared my special evening with her and her husband Rich.

One by one as the bands came up to play I couldn’t help but notice the trouble they went to in dressing up for the occasion. You would have sworn we were in the 1960’s at the Rendezvous Ballroom with them dressed to the nines in their dress shirts, ties and matching suits. The entire day on into the night was filled with nostalgia, love and high energetic incredible performances. As each band played they either sang or said “Happy Birthday” and sent their get-well messages of love to Dick Dale. Norm Cowell’s 9-year-old son James played Pipeline during Surf City’s performance and was quite professional looking at the audience periodically and spot-checking the guys to see if they were in the groove with him. James couldn’t wait to tell me he practiced long and hard just to play for me. It was the celebration of epic proportion with loving dedication from so many wonderful guys & gals who willing made this such, a great success. I am still “STOKED TO THE MAX” and I have no intention of ever forgetting this event as long as I live. It’s these wonderful loving gestures that make all the work I do well worth the efforts and then some. As I pour my heart and soul into organizing and promoting the bands that play at the museum I will remember this memorable day in my honor. Thanks JR.

Thanks goes out to The Rip Tides, The Sound Waves, Surf City, Surftones, Surf Rockets, Glasgow Tiki Shakers, The Sand Devils, The Surfaris, The Eliminators, Outer Wave and special guests Eddie Bertrand and Dave Wronski. An honorable mention of John Blair is in order to say thanks for your support and kind wishes for Dick. Thanks also to Tim Ferrill for introducing Tom Duncan to me. A humble thanks goes to Tom for coming in and filming this historic event when I know how busy you are. Thanks to all my extended family, new found friends and friends of the museum for your support. Hope to see you all April 20th for our first Surfin Sunday of the season starting one hour earlier at NOON till 4 pm.

Sincerely

Linda
