"Turn the knob to 10 and break it off!" -Baja Marty

I almost forgot--it may help to let you know this takes place in Toronto. Hopefully I'll have plenty of great photos when I return.

Dan is a member here. Actually, met Dan on the SG101 yahoo group some time back. We got into a Deadbolt conversation and have talked ever since.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to say hi from Toronto. We are one night through the surf battle and have another night to go!

Last night's show was AMAZING!!! This was definitely worth my trip. There are some great musicians around here.

First off, a band called the Robots opened the show. I recently learned about them from My Space and didn't know much about them. Sound-wise, I wish I could have heard the guitar a bit better. The drums and bass were more noticable. However, the bass musician (sorry, I don't know his name) was quite talented.

Second up was a band called the Eradicators. I hadn't heard them before either. They did about a 50/50 mix of originals and covers. When they performed the covers, they were cleverly arranged. Two that I can think of that sounded very different from their original versions were "Pintor" and "Lonely Bull." They had a heavier sound than most trad cover bands. I would like to see these guys come out to California.

The third band was The Blue Demons. I had heard some of their material through their website and My Space. They played originals and covers as well. I was very pleased to hear "Cat on a Hot Foam Board" and "Casbah." They have a very heavy style of playing as well, not so trad, but still fun and high-evergy. They also add a burlesque act to the show. I'm looking forward to seeing this band again tonight with a different set-list. In addition, we'll be filming a video with The Blue Demons tomorrow.

Last, but defintely not least, was my friend Dan's band, The von Drats. OK, first off, I have never heard them before. Due to some line-up changes, recording has been put off and the tunes are not available yet to sample.
I had no idea I was in for such a great show. I kept saying it was like the Bomboras minus the fire! But in retrospect, I can think of a better way to describe them. The band is very audience oriented. If any of you have seen the Volcanics, then I could say the von Drats play in that spirit. Sound-wise, they have a 50/50 surf and garage act. As a rough estimate, I'd say they performed 2/3 instos and 1/3 vocals. In addition, they play covers and originals.
The band has a Farfisa player, which really gave the show a nice touch. The best part is that they know how to implement the keys without it being overbearing. Sometimes, the organ can drown out the rest of the band, but in this case, it didn't. The musicianship was amazing. They are all class-act musicians. Many people in the audience told me that this was the best performance they'd seen by the von Drats. The band line up (forgive me for not having last names) is Len, formerly of the Brimstones, on drums, Trevor on guitar, Dan on bass, and Dave on keys. I'm looking forward to more of the same tonight.

So far, my trip has been great. I miss everyone at home and I'm sorry I have to miss the pier gig tomorrow. However, Canada is an amazing place and I look forward to more of it!

OK, back for another show review!

On Saturday night, 4 bands played. The first was an instro band that consisted of 2 guitar players and a drummer. They did some surf covers, but really weren't a surf band.

The second band was the Lorrainas (sp?). They weren't a surf band either, but put on a great show. They are a five piece band, one being a singer. Excellent musicianship!

The last two were the Blue Demons and the von Drats again, although this time the von Drats played before the Demons. The von Drats threw the crowd for a loop, coming out on stage dressed at headhunters/witchdoctors instead of the usual stripes. It was funny. The Blue Demons played right after, performing a different set of songs.

On Sunday, they filmed a continuing "story" to the Blue Demons first video on a ship docked here called the Empire Sandy. At first, I wasn't sure what this would all entail. Once we all arrived, it was real fun and amusing. I can't wait to see the finished product! They still need to film all the fighting scenes.

The two nights we had were great! Made some new friends, saw some old ones. Having Tena come out was great and we all miss her. We've got to do this again next year. If we do, I'm gonna put out some notice so maybe some others can come up and party with us.

You said it, DanO!

The weekend was a blast, I'm just starting to recover, so yeah, it must be time to start thinking about next year!
